SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH

Image

The Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services continues to work on suicide prevention efforts through our participation in the National Governor's Challenge. We recognize the urgent need to address the critical issue and we are taking targeted actions to make a difference.

One of the objectives of our suicide prevention strategy is comprehensive training to medical professionals across the state and ensuring they are military competent and trauma-informed. By appropriately screening, we can identify those who may be struggling with invisible wounds of their service and provide them with the support they need.

Secondly, as part of the Governor's Challenge we understand the importance of fostering a sense of community and support. Through hosting our veteran centric expos across the state, we're able to showcase an array of benefits available to veterans and their families as well as build connections and camaraderie; by introducing them to peer to peer organizations where they connect with other veterans and activities they may be interested in.

Lastly, we understand the critical role responsible firearm storage can play in preventing tragedies, soon we will be working with local gun shops and gun ranges to provide safe storage solutions. Through collaboration and education we aim to put time and space between a veteran and their firearm when they are in crisis, without the stigma of government oversight.

Image

It's the end of summer and for some folks that means it's also back to school. Here at the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, we're doing our part to help veterans and their families get connected to the education benefits they've earned. Below we'll shed some light on a few resources offered to assist with the transition from military service to academic success.

Veterans' Dependents Educational Benefits (VDEB)

VDEB is designed to assist the children and spouses of veterans in
obtaining a quality education.

    service-connected disability. Or who
  • Was killed in action;
  • Died from a service-connected disability as a result of service;
    At the time of death was totally and permanently disabled due to a service-connected disability, but whose death was not related to the service-connected disability; or
  • Is a member of the Armed Forces on active duty who has been
    listed for more than 90 days as missing in action, captured or

State Approving Agency for GI Bill Programs (SAA):

Navigating the complexities of the GI Bill and its related educational benefits can be overwhelming. This is where our dedicated State Approving Agency (SAA) steps in. The SAA serves as the bridge between veterans and educational institutions, certifying courses and programs that are eligible for GI Bill benefits. We work closely with academic institutions across the state to ensure that the coursework aligns with the requirements of the GI Bill, enabling veterans to make the most of their educational opportunities.

For more information regarding education services, please contact our office at 207-287-7020 or email mbvs@maine.gov

FREE YMCA MEMBERSHIPS AVAILABLE TO QUILIFYING MAINE VETERANS

Image

The YMCA Alliance of Northern New England is partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Maine Healthcare System to grant Maine veterans access to YMCA programs and facilities across the state.

This initiative will utilize VA funds to cover monthly memberships for qualified Maine veterans.

Since the Togus VA Medical Center closed its gym and swimming pool during the pandemic, veterans have lacked a dedicated facility to support their wellness; this new partnership provides qualified veterans with the opportunity to join their local YMCA free of charge, with a referral from their VA Maine primary care physician.

Maine veterans interested in accessing this benefit must receive a referral from their VA Maine primary care physician.

The 15 YMCAs in Maine serve more than 95,000 people across the state each year.

For information about the alliance, visit nneymcas.org.

Veterans are encouraged to enroll in VA health care at va.gov or by calling 877-222-8387.
